Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)
Gears up for Active Fall Schedule

WBCALILBURN, GA.  The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), founded in 1981, boasts more than 5,000 members and a multitude of programs and events, highlighted by the National Convention, which has drawn more than 2,000 registrants each year since 1996.  Held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four, the event has become a signature event for women’s basketball and women’s sports.

As part of their year-long active schedule and programs, the WBCA will co-host three exciting women's basketball tournaments this fall.  On Nov. 24 and 25, the WBCA will partner with Chaminade University to launch the inaugural Women's Maui. For nearly two decades, Chaminade has hosted the Maui Invitational that features many of the top men's college basketball programs from around the nation.  The 2000 Women's Maui will feature such top-ranked teams as Tennessee, Illinois, Clemson and Alcorn State.

That same weekend (Nov. 22 and 24) the WBCA and the Gazelle Group will host the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge featuring four of college basketball’s best teams – Wisconsin, Georgia, Notre Dame and Oklahoma  – they will face each other at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

For the third consecutive year, the WBCA will team with Secret Antiperspirant and Nike to host the Secret Four in the Fall.  This year's tournament will be played on Dec. 9 in Austin, Texas, on the campus of the University of Texas.

Almost in unison, as the fall schedule concludes the WBCA will begin aggressively preparing for the the five-day 2001 WBCA National Convention, slated for March 28-April 1, 2001, in St. Louis, Mo.  The annual event will feature an exhibit show, awards banquets, professional development seminars, social activities and legislative sessions.   Also taking place annually during the WBCA National Convention is the WBCA All-Star Challenge. This event, an exhibition basketball game and three-point shooting contest, features 17 of the nation’s finest Division I senior collegiate players as well as the Rawlings Player of the Year from Division II, III and NAIA.

Immediately following the National Convention, the WBCA staff travels to Hartford, Conn., for the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game presented by NIKE. This premier event for girls’ high school basketball players began in 1992, and has become the showcase for 20 of the nation’s top female high school athletes.  Such notable players as Nykesha Sales, Chamique Holdsclaw, Saudia Roundtree and Katie Smith have participated in this event.

Members of the WBCA include coaches, players, administrators, fans and friends of the game at the recreational, AAU, high school, college and professional levels.
