CBS to Broadcast Premier Women's Tennis Event
2001 Family Circle Cup Scores Network Television Coverage on CBS

Family Circle CupCHARLESTON, S.C. The Family Circle Cup made history in 1973 when it became the first womenıs professional tennis tournament to be broadcast on network television. Over the past 28 years, the tournament has received some of the most extensive television coverage for an all-womenıs event. The Family Circle Cup, scheduled for April 14-22, will start a new tradition in 2001 by having the semifinals and finals broadcast on CBS. By adding one of the premier womenıs events on the Sanex WTA Tour, CBS will add even more power to their impressive list of tennis events.

"CBS has been providing outstanding coverage of the U.S. Open for over 30 years, and we look forward to that same quality in our tournament telecast," stated Lisa Thomas, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director. "Charleston is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in our country, and what better venue to highlight that tradition than the Family Circle Cup."

CBS has signed a three-year contract as the tournamentıs television partner and will broadcast the semifinals and finals on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. The broadcast times are still subject to change, but currently they are from 1:00 ­ 3:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

The new Family Circle Cup Tennis Center in Charleston is currently under construction and will feature a permanent stadium, a racquet club and 17 tennis courts (13 clay, 4 hard). Family Circle Cupıs partnership with the City of Charleston will combine the rich tradition of two entities. It will be a first class tennis facility that will service the community on a year round basis.

The Family Circle Cup, celebrating 29 years in womenıs professional tennis, boasts a purse of over one million dollars. One of the longest running, richest and most popular events in womenıs tennis, the Cup has traditionally attracted the worldıs outstanding female tennis players for more than 28 years.
