ESPN to Televise More WNBA Games in 2001

NEW YORK, NY.  The WNBA and ESPN expanded their television agreement to bring more games to the cable network for the upcoming season.   The agreement calls for 12 more regular-season games plus playoff contests to ESPN and ESPN2, and a new half-hour WNBA-themed magazine show to Lifetime Television this season.

Beginning with the start of the 2001 season and continuing through the WNBA championship, Lifetime will air on Friday nights a new NBA Entertainment-produced magazine show, which highlights the on- and off-court lives of players and coaches.

"We're thrilled to expand our national cable partnerships," WNBA president Val Ackerman said. "Our network partners' dedication to women's sports and basketball has been key to the WNBA success, and we are delighted about the addition of games on ESPN2 and the new weekly show on Lifetime."

"The additional WNBA games reflect our continuing commitment to women's sports and enhance ESPN2's primetime lineup," ESPN president George Bodenheimer said.

Games that formerly were on Lifetime on Friday nights during the league's first four seasons will be on Thursday nights, with some Sunday afternoon games on ESPN2.

In May, the WNBA tips off its fifth season, which runs until late August.
