Professional Girl Wrestling Association (PGWA)

Rookie Of The Year 2001

Mia Martinez

WILKESBORO, NC (December 28, 2001) Once each year, the Professional Girl Wrestling Association chooses a single newcomer whom we feel best combines talent, determination, and a loving respect for the sport, and we honor that woman as the Rookie of the Year.  For 2001, it is our pleasure to bestow that honor upon Mia Martinez.

While, technically, Mia began her pro career in 1999, PGWA executives felt that it was in 2001 that she truly came into her own and blossomed into one of the most exciting young talents in the sport.  Besides, we prefer to abide by the axiom that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.  Any way that you look at it, 2001 was Mia's year, and she deserves to be spotlighted for all of her hard work.

The Guadalajara, Mexico native now calls Chicago her home, and it is from there that she has steadily advanced her career, wrestling a long string of opponents in matches throughout the Midwest.

Standing 5'4" and weighing in at 135 lbs., Mia combines solid power with surprising speed and, perhaps most importantly of all, a deep knowledge of pro moves and tactics.  A lifelong fan, she became especially inspired by the likes of Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Leilani Kai to give wrestling a try herself.  She came under the tutelage of Danny Dominion and Ace Steel, two of the top wrestlers on the independent circuit today, and they saw to it that their apt pupil received an advanced education in Old School grappling!  This includes helping her develop her signature submission, the highly complex Sharpshooter.

Her training underway, Mia sought out advice from some established women in the sport.  Lexie Fyfe and Amy Dumas both recommended Mia to the PGWA, and it was in our ring that she had her professional debut.  We're proud to say that she had her very first match under our auspices, paired against Fyfe, and that she gave the wily Foxy Lady a serious challenge!  From that very first bout, it was obvious that Mia Martinez was a force to be reckoned with!

By 2001, Mia (affectionately dubbed La Chica Diamante by her fans) was working regularly in rings from Wisconsin to Arkansas, Illinois to North Carolina, and all points in-between, facing such worthy opponents as Diane Von Hoffman, Brandi Collins, Macaela Mercedes, Lady Vendetta, and many others.  Promoters quickly learned that Mia could be counted on to give them an excellent match, and the fans never fail to respond wildly to her ring efforts.

With such a successful year behind her, Mia can look forward to a future of ever-growing accomplishments and fame.  Her long term plans include ultimately touring Japan.  Only the very best succeed in Japan, and as this award suggests, Mia Martinez is among the very best this young generation offers to the sport of wrestling!
