WSAW will recognize Award of Excellence recipients

MILWAUKEE, WI. (Jan. 5, 2001) - The Award of Excellence presented by the Women's Sports Advocates of Wisconsin enters its second decade February 17 with the recognition of 224 student-athletes. The Award of Excellence recipients are high school seniors with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and a letter in at least one varsity girls sport. The student-athletes will be honored at WSAW's 11th Annual Awards Banquet at the Four Points Sheraton Milwaukee Airport Hotel.

In addition to the presentation of the student award recipients, the banquet will be highlighted by the conferring of WSAW's Lifetime Achievement Award to Mary Beth Nienhaus, retired teacher and coach at Appleton West High School and now the owner of Winagamie Golf Course in Neenah.

The WSAW Annual Awards Banquet is recognized by the Women's Sports Foundation as the state's official celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The day kicks off with a seminar from 2 to 4 p.m., by sports medicine expert Dr. Craig L. Jordan, D.C. Athletes, parents and coaches are invited to attend this no-fee seminar at the Four Points Sheraton.

At 5 p.m., a social hour and women's sports memorabilia raffle will begin. Raffle contributors include runner Suzy Favor Hamilton, Indianapolis 500 driver Sarah Fisher and numerous Olympic medal winners. Following the dinner and award presentations, the names of two Award of Excellence recipients who are in attendance will be drawn and those student-athletes each will receive a $500 college scholarship presented by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Wisconsin.
