2001
National Gold Medal and State Park Award Winners MOUNT PROSPECT, IL (October
3, 2001) The 2001 National Gold Medal Awards, co-sponsored by the National
Sporting Goods Association’s (NSGA) Sports Foundation, Inc. and the National
Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), were presented to winners at the
NRPA’s annual convention October 3 in Denver, Colo. These awards are
presented annually to communities and states for excellence in park and
recreation administration. The
winners are: CLASS
I (POPULATION 250,000+)
– Cleveland Metroparks,
Cleveland, Ohio. Nominated by: Newman Outfitters, Inc., Shaker Heights,
Ohio. CLASS
II (100,000 - 250,000)
– Peoria Park District, Peoria, Ill. Nominated by: Running

III (50,000 - 100,000)
– Arlington Heights Park District, Arlington Heights, Ill. Nominated
by: Mighty Mites, Des Plaines, Ill. CLASS
IV (20,000 - 50,000)
– City of Westerville, Ohio Parks & Recreation Department,
Westerville, Ohio. Nominated by: Roush Sporting Goods, Westerville,
Ohio. CLASS
V (LESS THAN 20,000)
– Herndon Parks & Recreation Department, Herndon, Va. Nominated
by: Fitness Resource, Fairfax, Va. STATE
PARKS AWARD
– Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation, Division of State
Parks,
Richmond, Va. Nominated by: Dixie Sporting Goods, Richmond, Va. Each
winner was selected based upon improvement, service, continuing development,
extent of future planning and degree of participant involvement and acceptance
by the community.
Judges
are nationally recognized authorities in the field of park and recreation
management. They are: Chairperson Fran P. Mainella, Florida Division of
Recreation & Parks, Tallahassee, Fla.; Ellen O’Sullivan, Leisure
Lifestyle Consulting, Glastonbury, Conn.; Richard Zavala, City of Fort Worth
Parks and Community Services Department, Fort Worth, Texas; Steven K. Messerli,
Lake County Forest Preserve District, Libertyville, Ill.; and Chris Jarvi,
Director of Community Services, Anaheim, Calif. NSGA’s
Sports Foundation is a non-profit membership organization founded to stimulate
interest in the development of new recreational activities and facilities and
to encourage participation in sports. It established the National Gold Medal
Awards Program for park and recreation management in 1965. In 1997, the
National Gold Medal State Park Award was created for recognizing the
achievements of state park systems and their contributions in providing park,
recreation and leisure services to the citizens of their state. The State Park
Gold Award is presented in odd-numbered years. For
