SC (April 15, 2002) - Family Circle magazine is a publication dedicated to
family values. For many people,
including professional tennis players, pets are members of the family.
To celebrate that the Family Circle Cup becomes the first tour event to
create a pet friendly environment where players are allowed to bring their dogs
to the site and have them taken care of while they are at work.
Because of her dedication and passion for animal rights, the tournament
decided to name the canine retreat after four-time Family Circle Cup champion
Martina Navratilova. From this year
on, the park located near the clubhouse will be called "Martina's Puppy
Park." "A
tennis player's life on the road can be very lonely and pets provide a sense of
normalcy and comfort," stated Navratilova. "To have a tournament
create a specific area where players can drop off their dogs while they are on
site practicing or playing a match is a great service to offer us.
It certainly puts our minds at rest knowing that our pets are being taken
care of. I wish every tournament
took this approach." "Martina's
Puppy Park" provides the dogs with an area to run and play and is stocked
with food and toys. The Veterinary
Technology program at Trident Technical College in Charleston is providing
equipment and staff for "Martina's Puppy Park."
The Veterinary program is one of only three associate degree programs in
South Carolina. The staff and
students of the program are taking first class care of perhaps some of the most
famous dogs in the sporting world. While
traveling on the tour, players are often photographed with their dogs at
tournaments. "Our
goal at Family Circle Cup is to make players feel like this is their home away
from home and having a service like this is a natural extension of that,"
commented Frankie Whelan, Executive Director of the Family Circle Cup.
"For many of us pets play an important part in our lives and we are
glad to start another tradition here at Family Circle Cup that we will continue
year after year." The
tournament, owned and operated by Family Circle magazine, is being held April
13-21 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
The Family Circle Cup, one of the longest running women's professional
tennis events in the United States, is celebrating 30 years in women's
professional tennis. Ticket
packages are now on sale and a variety of packages are available.
