Detroit's WNBA
Franchise May Be Bound For San Antonio
DETROIT MI (August 6, 2002) Amid
reports that the Shock will move to San Antonio next season, team
president Tom Wilson said Friday that the future of the franchise hasn't
been decided.
Wilson said Friday that WNBA
commissioner Val Ackerman assured him earlier this week that moving the
Shock out of Detroit had not been discussed.
The Utah Starzz and Charlotte Sting
have also been mentioned as candidates to relocate.
The Shock is last in WNBA attendance,
and Ackerman's only trip to Detroit came during its 0-13 start. The
Shock lost 10 straight before replacing Greg Williams with Bill Laimbeer
as coach. Although Laimbeer has helped rejuvenate the team, it is
assured a fourth straight losing season.
Despite that, Wilson said the
organization has hope. Rookie Swin Cash is a player around whom the
Shock can build, and the team will have two first-round draft picks next
year, including one top-three selection.
