National Women's Football League Names Kansas Team

KANSAS CITY KS (August 21, 2002) The National Women's Football League has chosen Kansas City for an expansion team in 2003. The team has been named...the Krunch.

The Kansas City Krunch will join the Mid western division for the 2003 season. The league plays from April-July.

Kansas City resident, Cheryl Fields will act as general manager until the league finds an owner. The Krunch are looking for players, coaches and an owner.

"We have been patient about our westward expansion," states Debby Lening, VP Marketing, NWFL. "We've been getting emails and phone calls from women wanting to play in Kansas City for almost 2 years! We have been careful not to expand too quickly. We are now ready for this division," adds Lening.

Tryouts for the Krunch will be held Saturday, August 24, 2002 at Wyandotte County Park located at 125th & State Ave. Tryouts are 10:00 AM registration is at 9:30am. All participants must be at least 18 years old and have their own insurance. There is a one time $35.00 tryout fee.

The National Women's Football League, Inc. entered its second full season with 21 teams that kicked-off on April 20. The league, which began in August 2000, plays full contact football using NFL rules.

The league wrapped up it's 2002 season with the ESSERE Championship game. The Detroit Danger (first season) beat the Mass Mutiny (second season) 48-30 in front of over 5,000 fans.

NWFL expansion teams include: the Pittsburgh Passion, Columbus Flames, Toledo Spitfire, Rochester Raptors, St. Louis Slam, and Junction City Cavalry (KS). The NWFL is also considering: Des Moines, Erie (PA), and Columbia (SC) as possible expansion sites.
