Women's Football
Coming to Erie!
ERIE PA (August 21, 2002) The National
Women's Football League, the largest women's football league in the
world, has chosen Erie for an expansion team in 2003. The National
Women's Football League is a full contact football league.
The National Women's Football League,
Inc. just completed its second full season with 21 teams. The league,
which began in August 2000, plays full contact football using NFL rules.
Erie is one of the cities planned for the 2003 season and league
officials feel that it's a great market for women's football. "We
have some rivalries already established for Erie," states Debby
Lening, VP Marketing/Media, NWFL, Inc. "We have had interest in
Erie and feel that with the addition of the Pittsburgh Passion, Erie
would be a great addition to the league," adds Lening.
Tryouts will be held Saturday,
September 7th from 1:30 to 4:30 at McKean Twp. Recreation Park, McKean,
PA. All participants must be at least 18 years old and have their own
insurance. There is a one time $35.00 tryout fee. The league is looking
for players, coaches and an owner.
NWFL expansion teams include: the
Pittsburgh Passion, Columbus Flames, Toledo Spitfire, Rochester Raptors,
St. Louis Slam, KC Krunch and Junction City Cavalry (KS). The NWFL is
also considering: Des Moines, Jackson MS, Baton Rouge, LA, and Columbia
(SC) as possible expansion sites.
The 2002 ESSERE Championship was held
in Pittsburgh, PA on July 27. 5,208 fans attended while the Detroit
Danger (first season) beat the Mass Mutiny (second season) 48-30.
