Venus James Released by CyberRays
Team Now One Player Under Roster Limit

SAN JOSE CA (January 10, 2002)  Midfielder Venus James has been waived by the WUSA champion San Jose CyberRays and claimed by the Carolina Courage.

The roster moves, concluded over the winter holiday break, bring the CyberRays’ roster down to 17 players, one below the WUSA limit, in advance of the 2002 Global Draft on Feb. 11.

James, 22, is a native of Oakland and was chosen by the CyberRays in the 11th round of the 2000 WUSA Global Draft after completing her final UCLA season with an appearance in the NCAA championship game at Spartan Stadium. She appeared in 11 matches for the CyberRays, nine as a starter, as a flank midfielder.

James became expendable when the CyberRays changed their system from five midfielders in a 3-5-2 alignment to three in a 4-3-3.

The CyberRays will open training camp for their Founders Cup defense March 1 and will open the season in mid-April.
