Tennis Great Monica Seles Enters 2002 Family Circle Cup CHARLESTON SC (January 9, 2002) Former No. 1 and nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles has officially entered the 2002 Family Circle Cup, announced Executive Director Frankie Whelan. Seles, currently No. 10 in the world, will be competing in her fifth Family Circle Cup, having reached the Cup final in her debut in 1997. She will join other tennis stars like Jennifer Capriati this spring when the 2002 Family Circle Cup celebrates 30 years in women's professional tennis. The tournament, owned and operated by Family Circle magazine, will be held April 13 - 21 at The Tennis Centre at Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. "In professional sports what makes an athlete stand apart is not only their success on the playing field but also their character and what they give back to the sport," stated Whelan. "Not only does she have the records and titles that go along with the superstar status but she also has incredible strength, determination and courage that few athletes possess. This will be Monica's first appearance here in Charleston and we look forward to showing off this great facility as well as the charm and elegance of Charleston." Last year Seles withdrew from the Family Circle Cup with right foot tendinitis. The injury, which forced her to withdraw from three tournaments in the spring, kept her off the Sanex WTA Tour for six weeks. In 2001 Seles won four Sanex WTA Tour singles bringing her career total to 51. By winning the Japan Open this past September she became one of only eight women in the Open Era to win 50 singles titles. During the 2001 season she scored three victories over the top two players in the world. She defeated Martina Hingis twice and Jennifer Capriati once. Seles has nine Grand Slams singles championships to her credit and has won over $13 million in career prize money. The Family Circle Cup is celebrating 30 years in women's professional tennis. The tournament is one of the longest running women's professional tennis events in the United States and showcases a week of world-class tennis. Ticket packages are now on sale and a variety of packages are available.
