Danger's Angela
Griffin Named MVP for the
NWFL's 2002 SupHer Bowl
PITTSBURGH PA (July 31, 2002) The
Detroit Danger's Angela Griffin (#81) put on quite a show at the NWFL's
2002 SupHer Bowl in Pittsburgh, July 27th. A receiver and defensive back
for the team, Griffin scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 68
and 59 yards. And, if that wasn't enough, Griffin caught 5 passes for
167 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. When Griffin wasn't blasting down the
field towards the goal line, she was creating havoc for the Mutiny's
offense. Her talents are equally as good on offense and defense and with
11 minutes remaining in the game, she managed to break up a definite
touchdown pass over the middle. This set up the Danger for another
score.
Griffin is called the spirit of the
Detroit team and she showed the fans why. Everywhere you looked, there
she was, creating excitement. A part time model, Griffin reminds many of
the WNBA star, Lisa Leslie. Griffin is an all around athlete and
attended Wayne State University on a Basketball Scholarship, where she
was "All conference." While attending Wayne State, she also
participated in volleyball & track.
Griffin was one of the stars of the
NWFL's play offs and with 51 seconds remaining on the clock against the
Pensacola Power, she ran 51 yards for the winning touchdown.
The NWFL's SupHer Bowl again proved to
the nay-sayers that women's full contact football could bring in fans
with over 5,000 fans in the stands cheering the teams on. The fans
watched Griffin and the Detroit Danger, a first year expansion team,
beat the seasoned Mass Mutiny 48-30. "It was a totally amazing
event and I am very proud of everyone who participated. Angela Griffin
and the two teams sure helped prove that women can play an exciting
brand of full contact football. Our sincere congratulations to all of
the players and coaches who helped make this SupHer Bowl such an
outstanding event, " states league CEO, Catherine Masters.
The NWFL had 21 teams play in the 2002
season and will add additional teams for the 2003 season. The season
will begin in April 2003. NWFL expansion teams so far include: the
Pittsburgh Passion, Columbus Flames, Toledo Spitfire, Rochester Raptors
and Junction City Cavalry (KS). The NWFL is also considering: Des
Moines, St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Erie (PA), and Columbia (SC) as
possible expansion sites.
The league website,
